Verticutting also know as vertical mowing is a process of using a greens mower fitted with thin and tightly spaced blades that cut vertically into the turf. We usually try to cut at a depth of 1/8” lower than our mowing height. When we verticut depends on the time of year and the weather conditions. During the main growing season, we try to verticut every 2 weeks and follow it with a light topdressing of sand which helps us to maintain a healthy level of thatch.

Our greens are seeded with Bentgrass which has a growth habit that spreads with stolons. When we verticut we are laterally cutting the stolons which promotes an upright growth habit. The process of verticutting also pulls some of the thatch and dead plant material out of the turf canopy which greatly improves the health of the turf canopy.

The long-term benefits of verticutting help to achieve a thin layer of thatch which improves ball roll and speed. The green will be more resistant to footprints and ball marks and be able to recover from damage quicker.
